Can Trace go anywhere on the board or my body?

No, Trace needs to be on the nose of your board to properly collect info and data. Don’t worry, Trace is really small and light, you won’t even feel it.

Can I use the same Trace for multiple sports?

Yes, the same sensor works in all the sports Trace covers like surfing, skiing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, SUP, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and more. Refer to the chart at the top of this page to learn more about which sports Trace works for. Please write into support@TraceUp.com for more information.

Does Trace Float?

No, Trace does not float in the water. If you do lose Trace in the water, though, it will remain waterproof up to 10m. Trace also comes with a leash eyelet for added protection.

Does water temperature affect the functionality?

No, water temperature does not affect Trace functionality. No matter how cold or warm the water is, Trace will track all of your stats.

Is Trace sold in stores?

Yes, Trace is sold in retail stores. To find a store near you, visit the store locator.

Does Trace have a leash tether that I can use to secure it?

Yes, trace does have a leash eyelet that you can use to secure your Trace to bindings, a leash loop, virtually anything. This will keep your Trace secure in the odd case that the mount comes off.

What if I have multiple boards? Can I move Trace from board to board?

Yes, Trace was made be versatile and used from board to board! You can purchase extra mounts from our store. The mounts use aviation grade adhesive from 3M and will attach to virtually any surface. Inside the Trace apps, you can tag and add the equipment that you used for that particular session.

Can I use a different camera than a GoPro?

Yes, Trace syncs with virtually any camera. You can find more instructions on how to sync other cameras here: http://www.TraceUp.com/getting-started/trace-video

How many sessions can Trace store?

Trace can store more than 50 sessions before it runs out of space.

How are surf turns measured?

Trace measures two parts of a surf turn: rail angle and turn angle. Click the links above to watch in-depth depictions of how Trace measures each.

Do I need to have my phone near me when I use Trace?

No, Trace does not need to be anywhere near a phone to record. Trace will work as a stand alone product. Sync your Trace when you get back to your phone to see all of the info.

What’s the ideal place to mount Trace on my board?

One thing to keep in mind when selecting a place to mount your Trace is that you want Trace to spend as much time out of the water as possible. For a sufboard, you’ll want to place Trace on the nose of your board. Trace does not need to be in the center of the stringer, and can be placed on either side. Just make sure that when you mount Trace, it’s flush against your equipment, without the sides lifting off on either side.

For kiting, wind, and kayaking, make sure that you mount Trace in a place where it’ll be mostly above water. Often the best place is close to or above your front foot.

Will Trace work if I put it in my pocket?

Yes, Trace will work in your pocket while skiing. You’ll want to put it in a small, outside pocket, so that the Trace isn’t bouncing around. Jump stats will be less accurate in your pocket, but all the other stats should be fine. You can also mount Trace to your helmet or boot.

Can I use the same Trace for multiple sports?

Yes, the same sensor works in all the sports Trace supports which are surfing, skiing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, SUP, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and several more in the works. Will temperature affect the functionality of my Trace?

Temperature will not affect the performance of your Trace, but it can affect the battery life. Up to -6.5C (20F) you should see 6.5 - 7.5 hours of battery life on your Trace. Below -11C (12F), your Trace battery will be cut in half. Below -25C (-13F), your Trace will shut off to protect the battery and circuitry.

One option for when it’s really cold outside is to put Trace in your chest pocket where it’s warmer. All of your stats should stay just as accurate except for jumps and airtime, which will be 90% as accurate.

Does Trace have a leash tether that I can use to secure it?

Yes, trace does have a leash eyelet that you can use to secure your Trace to bindings, a leash loop, virtually anything. This will keep your Trace secure in the odd case that the mount comes off.

How many sessions can Trace store?

Trace can store more than 50 sessions before it runs out of space. Every time you sync with your phone, all sync’d sessions are deleted from your Trace and that space is freed for more recording.

Does Trace work in the backcountry?

Yes, Trace does work in the backcountry. If you are heli-skiing, Trace will not work as well.

Will Trace know when I am on the chair lift and not record height, speed, and account for the lift in video edits?

Yes, Trace will know all of the above and much more. Trace not only automatically separates your runs and lifts, but it is also able to detect when you’re waiting in line and resting on the slope. The Trace video auto editor will automatically splice these segements out, and your stats for active time will not include those either.

You don’t need to turn your Trace on and off between runs, the Trace software will automatically segment all of this for you.

Do I need to have my phone near me when I use Trace?

No, Trace does not need to be anywhere near a phone to record. Trace will work as a stand alone product.

What is the ideal placement for Trace on skis or a snowboard?

The ideal placement of Trace on your skis is right in front of the binding on either foot. You’ll want to make sure to thread thin rope through the eyelet and secure the mount to your bindings. By placing your Trace in front of the binding, you’ll be able to check on it easily and the GPS will have clear view of the sky

The ideal placement on a snowboard for Trace is next to the binding. Your board will flex a lot at the ends and be more stable by your bindings.

Which cameras work with Trace Video?

Almost all cameras work with Trace video, including your iPhone or Android. If you can set the time and date on your camera, it should be able to work.

How do I sync my GoPro?

We have a special integration for GoPro cameras for the Hero 3+ and above. To sync your GoPro, connect your GoPro to your phone’s WiFi and . To learn more and see how-to videos click here.

How do I sync a different camera not listed above?

You’ll need to be able to access the settings on your camera. You’ll find more information on exactly how to do this here.

How do I sync a Sony Camera / iPhone / Android?

For a Sony camera with GPS inside, like the action cam, you do not need to sync with your Trace. It comes pre-sync’d. The same goes with iPhone and Android. Just use the camera app and then pull those files onto your computer into the Trace Video app. You can learn more on how to use the app here.

What do you mean it edits out the highlights?

We’ve all been there, going through hours of footage trying to find the 3 minutes you want. Trace knows what you’re doing: waiting in line for a lift or getting your max speed, paddling around or catching a wave, in the middle of a jump or just getting your gear set up. Using intelligent algorithms, we decide what’s important and what isn’t . Turn 40GB of drone video into 300MB of highlights from your last trip.

How does Trace Video actually work?

There’s a lot that goes into it. We take into account frame rates, color saturation, weather while you were recording with Trace, and a whole lot more. Our goal is to make your videos professional quality without any of the headache or work that’s involved!

Does Trace Video work for Mac and PC?

On a Mac, you can download the Trace Video app to get started. For PC, you’ll need to connect to your Dropbox account. Yes, a PC app is currently being developed and should be ready in April. You can learn more about how to use the Mac and Dropbox app here.

How long does the battery last for?

The battery on Trace should last for 7 hours at room temperature. At temperatures below 10F, you should have 4 hours of battery life due to the cold.

Is Trace waterproof?

Yes, Trace is waterproof to 10 meters. In fact, every Trace is tested in a water-pressure chamber to insure it’s a perfect seal.

How often do you need to clean Trace

Trace is hermetically sealed, so cleaning isn’t too important. You’ll want to make sure that there isn’t a thick layer of dirt on your Trace which may affect GPS reception, but otherwise, every other sessions, throw your Trace under the faucet (clean tap water, no salt) and give it a nice scrub with your thumb. This should be enough.

How big is Trace?

Trace is tiny! It’s smaller than the size of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and at 1.4oz is about the weight of a slice of bread. you won’t feel it at all.

How strong is the adhesive on the Trace Mount?

The adhesive used on the Trace mount is the strongest adhesive that 3M makes, and is actually used on military jets. Apply the Trace mount 24 hours before taking your equipment out in room temperature.

Will salt water build up wear on Trace

No, as long as you wash your Trace off with clean water after every other use.

Does Trace have a leash or a way to secure it?

Yes, the Trace comes with a leash eyelet (does not come with a leash) that can be used to secure your Trace to bindings, another loop, or virtually everything.

How often does Trace need to be charged

Trace has 7 hours of battery life, so make sure to charge it after 5 - 6 hours of use. When you connect your Trace to the app, it’ll tell you how much battery life is left.

Like any piece of electronics, Trace does need to be used from time to time for the battery to remain charged and healthy. Do not go a full month without charging or not using your Trace. Putting it on the charger until Trace turns solid green (means the battery is fully charged) once a month is enough to keep the battery healthy.

Orders usually ship within 36 hours of receiving your order, Monday - Friday. If there is a problem with your order (for example: USPS does not accept your shipping address as valid) there may be further delays and our team will reach out to you directly to rectify any issues.

Do you ship internationally?

We do ship internationally, but not to all locations. If we do not ship to your location, you will hear back from our team directly and promptly (usually the same day). For international orders, the customer is responsible for all duties, taxes, and any other charges that may apply after shipment.
