The Surfline Scout utilizes data collected by qualified surfers who use Trace and incorporates it into the daily surf report. Now, surfers will know who the Surfline Scout is at each break every day, how many waves they caught, how long their average ride was, their paddle distance, and the exact water temp.
Trace users are continually logging real-time info on surf conditions. Length of
ride, wave speed, paddle distance per hour, and water temperature are just a few of the data points collected by Scouts and published on the Surfline Scout Report. Thanks to the Trace sensor fixed onto a Scout’s board, we can report this data with incredible accuracy, 10x more accurate than what you see on your phone or car’s GPS.
Scouts are qualified surfers who have applied and been approved by Trace and Surfline to ensure we deliver the most relevant data to the Surfline audience. Scouts are experienced surfers, in the water at least 5x a week, and their home breaks are spread out all across the world. After each season, Scouts sync their sensor with the free Trace mobile app, and Trace receives the session log and publishes the selected data on the Surfline page for the cam and report where the Scout just surfed.

Trace is run by surfers that are passionate about the Trace tribe. We built a small board mounted sensor that collects data about a surfer’s sessions, delivers that data to a free mobile app which allows surfers to journal their surfing, see how they are improving, and lets them compare themselves to the world and compete against friends.

Our co-founder/CTO spent ten years at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory before inventing modern GPS technology at Magellan. Our co-founder/CEO spent some time out of the water to earn an applied mathematics degree at Harvard. From there, he made it his mission to use technology to help himself and other surfers realize how fun it is to be the best surfer you can be.
